MIDDLE SCHOOL:
Cultural Exchange (Alaska)
Student Summary
Travel can be exciting, but it can also be scary to meet people
who speak, dress, eat, and act different from you. If you were an
Alaska Native living in the 1700s, how would you have felt when
you saw a strange ship approaching your village? What would you
have done? If you were a European approaching the heavily forested
slopes of southeastern Alaska, knowing that people were there, but
not knowing what they were like, what would you have felt and done?
Read the stories of the people who lived through those experiences.
Rewrite history as you think of alternative ways of dealing with
strangers.
